Synthetic tetrapeptide

D-Arg-2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine-Lys-Phe-NH2: the sequence alternates aromatic and basic residues and contains a D-residue and a dimethylated tyrosine, which a one-letter rendering cannot express.
SS-31 is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the structure D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH2, where Dmt is 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine. It belongs to the Szeto-Schiller series of peptides, whose alternating aromatic and basic residues give the molecules a net positive charge at physiological pH.
It was described by Zhao and colleagues in 2004 and is documented in the literature as associating with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It carries the development names elamipretide and MTP-131.
SS-31 is an investigational compound. It is not an approved drug in any jurisdiction, and it appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list under S0 (non-approved substances).
