Sermorelin is the first twenty-nine residues of human growth-hormone-releasing factor, made as a C-terminal amide. The amino-acid sequence is identical to the amino-terminal portion of the native 44-residue hormone; nothing is substituted.
The parent factor was isolated from a human pancreatic islet tumour and characterised in 1982, and the 1–29 fragment was shown in that period to retain the full activity of the longer sequence in vitro. Sermorelin is produced by chemical synthesis.
Sermorelin was the active ingredient of a prescription product formerly approved by the U.S. FDA and withdrawn from the market in 2008. The research material listed here is not that product and is not a drug.
