Synthetic heptapeptide

Semax is a synthetic peptide of seven amino-acid residues: methionine, glutamate, histidine, phenylalanine, proline, glycine, proline. Its first four residues reproduce residues 4 to 7 of adrenocorticotropic hormone; the proline-glycine-proline tail replaces the arginine-tryptophan-glycine of the natural ACTH(4–10) fragment.
The substitution removes the corticotropic portion of the parent sequence and slows cleavage by plasma peptidases. It was developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Semax is not an approved drug in the United States or the European Union. It has been registered in Russia; the research material listed here is not that product.
