The C-terminus is an amide rather than a free acid, which the one-letter string cannot show. The ten residues correspond to positions 112–121 of the human KiSS-1 gene product, which is the same stretch numbered 45–54 of the 54-residue peptide metastin.
Kisspeptin-10 is the C-terminal decapeptide of the human KiSS-1 gene product. The gene encodes a 145-residue precursor from which a 54-residue peptide is cleaved; kisspeptin-10 is the last ten residues of that peptide, and it ends in the Arg-Phe-amide motif shared by the RFamide peptide family.
The peptide was characterised by Kotani and colleagues in 2001, in work that isolated the KiSS-1 products from human placenta and identified them as the ligands of the receptor then known as GPR54. It is prepared by solid-phase synthesis.
Kisspeptin-10 is a research peptide. It is not an approved drug in any jurisdiction.
