Dinucleotide cofactor

NAD+ is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in its oxidised form: two nucleotides — one bearing nicotinamide, one bearing adenine — joined through their phosphate groups. It is not a peptide but a cofactor, present in every living cell, and it cycles between the oxidised (NAD+) and reduced (NADH) forms as it carries hydride between molecules.
It was first observed in 1906 by Harden and Young, who called the heat-stable factor they found in yeast extracts "cozymase". Warburg later identified the nicotinamide ring as the site of the redox chemistry. The listed material is the free acid or a salt of the oxidised form.
