Quinolinium small molecule
Also catalogued as 5-Amino-1-methylquinolinium iodide, 5-amino-1MQ, 5A1MQ.
Not a peptide. 5-Amino-1MQ is a single quinolinium ring bearing a methyl group on the ring nitrogen and an amino group at position 5, so it has no residues and no sequence. The formula and weight given are for the iodide salt, which is the form that ships; the cation alone is C10H11N2 and weighs 159.21.
5-Amino-1MQ is a small synthetic molecule built on the quinoline ring system: a bicyclic aromatic framework of a benzene ring fused to a pyridine ring. Quaternising the pyridine nitrogen with a methyl group gives the 1-methylquinolinium cation, and an amino substituent at the 5 position completes the structure. Because the ring nitrogen carries a permanent positive charge, the compound exists as a salt, and the iodide is the salt normally isolated.
It was described by Neelakantan and colleagues in 2017 as one of a series of quinolinium analogues of 1-methylnicotinamide, prepared to sit in the substrate site of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase. It is a wholly synthetic compound with no natural source.
5-Amino-1MQ is a research chemical. It is not an approved drug in any jurisdiction and holds no pharmacopoeial monograph.
